They already had a very in-depth website, but the city of Marne-la-Vallée recently had an event-specific website designed to cover its Sustainable Development Conference (in French only) on February 5, 2009. So what's the purpose of an event-specific website anyway? First of all, it lets organizations or companies announce an upcoming event, provide online coverage, relay news as it takes place, or report on it afterwards.
Since you can't be everywhere at once, event-specific websites let you attend seminars or conferences you're interested in...after the fact. In a nutshell: you no longer need to attend an event to actually "see" it. You can get access to it through video broadcasts on the web, within days (or even within the hour) of the said event.
Decked out in green... an "eco-citizen" site Let's take a look at the Marne-la-Vallée website for the Sustainable Development conference. For starters, the site design proudly exhibits the colors corresponding to the specifically "green" event. It offers videos of the workshops and the debate...interviews of the main players, whether speakers or decision-makers, and an overview of some sustainable development projects (a noteworthy example: the eco-neighborhoods).

Internet is not always tops. You have to take it for better or for worse. In some ways, Internet brings to mind the Ancient Library of Alexandria for the better...let's take another look at that myth.
The Library of Alexandria: the myth Built by Ptolemy I in the 3rd century BC, Alexandria was unrivalled as a library, housing up to 700,000 volumes in a very wide range of languages, before burning down a few centuries later. The library's initial aim was to spread knowledge, thus contributing to the Roman Empire's influence. Internet has become the 21st century's Library of Alexandria. It allows you to find information on just about any subject, if you know where to look... But some sites are definitely more noteworthy than others. |
